Aims: The main goal was to develop and validate the Anxiety and Avoidance of Situations due to Weight and Physical Appearance Scale (AASWPAS) in a sample of adolescents. Methods: The sample comprised 357 adolescents, 195 males and 162 females, with ages between 12 and 18 years old, attending secondary schools. Besides the AASWPAS participants also completed a sociodemographic data sheet and a set of self-reported measures that evaluate anxiety, stress and depressive symptoms, bullying experiences, and body-image shame feelings. Results: Both AASWPAS subscales (anxiety / discomfort and avoidance) revealed a two-factor structure and showed good internal consistency (Cronbach’s α= 0.91), good item quality and excellent temporal stability. The subscales of the AASWPAS were significantly and positively associated with feelings of shame, victi...
Aims: Social networks play a central role in the quality of the life of persons with additive behaviors, being determinant both in the maintenance, compensation or rehabilitation of these behaviors. The main substance of use is heroin (63.3%). We assessed the structural, functional and contextual-relational dimensions of their networks with the Social Personal Networks Analysis Tool. Results: The social networks of the participants are composed b...
Introduction: Parenting is a highly valued social role. However, for couples dealing with infertility this role can involve fertility treatments, and for some of them donor-assisted reproduction. For couples who use third party reproduction, another concern can emerge: tell the child about the donor conception, or preserve secrecy. Although arguments for decision-making have been studied, in Portugal research on this topic is scanty. Objectives: The current study sought out to develop the Motivations for Disclosing/Not Disclosing Non-genetic Parenthood through Gamete Donation (QMRDG), which is designed to assess motivations that influence the decision-making process of parents who use gamete donation regarding disclosure to his/her son/daughter his/her conception. Methods: This exploratory study was conducted in sample of 21 participant...
Aims: In Portugal, we did not find studies and instruments that evaluate tolerance to infidelity for the Portuguese population. Therefore, the aim of this preliminary study was to adapt and validate the Tolerance for Infidelity Scale (TIS) for the Portuguese population and to explore the associations between the tolerance for infidelity and different sociodemographic, relational and regarding infidelity (and its forgiveness) variables, self-criticism and self-compassion.Methods: 223 individuals (women, n = 155; 69,5%), with ages between 18 and 67 years old, answered a protocol consisting of a questionnaire with sociodemographic, relational and infidelity questions, the Tolerance for Infidelity Scale, the Self-compassion Scale and the Forms of Self-criticizing/Attacking and Self-Reassuring Scale. Results: The adapted version for the Port...

In the first issue of the Portuguese Journal of Behavioral and Social Research, it was described the importance of calculating, indicating and interpreting the effect sizes for the differences between means of two groups. The PJBSR intends to continue to remind of the importance of reporting effect sizes for other statistical tests. The magnitude of the strength of the relationships was not indicated in the previous paper, and it may not be known that correlation is an effect size. Thus, this paper intends to provide some guidelines to the authors on the procedures for calculating the Pearson correlation coefficient and some correlation coefficients for special data (Spearman Rho, Kendall’s Tau, Point-biserial and biserial, Phi, Cramér’s V, and Eta). For this purpose, the formulas, steps in the SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social S...
