O objetivo do presente trabalho é avaliar as propriedades psicométricas (fidedignidade e validade) da tradução portuguesa da Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale for Children (CES-DC). Métodos: A amostra é constituída por 417 adolescentes, com idades compreendidas entre os 12 e os 18 anos (M = 15,20, DP = 1,72). Foi utilizado o método trans...
Introduction: Quality of Life (QoL) plays a remarkable role in practice and public health policy. However, research on QoL among children and adolescents is still scarce and it seems crucial to develop and validate assessment tools for measuring health-related QoL. Objectives: The current study aims to analyse the psychometric properties and validate the Portuguese version of the Youth Quality of Life Instrument. In addition, the convergent and divergent validities are examined with related constructs. Methods: Participants were 507 adolescents, with ages between 12 and 19 years old (M = 15.74, SD = 1.62), attending middle and high schools. Together with YQOL-R, participants also filled out the Kidscreen-27 and the Depression Anxiety and Stress Scales (DASS-21). Results: The Portuguese version of YQOL-R showed a four-factor structure ...
// The first number of this second volume of PJBSR includes five original papers from researchers of Miguel Torga Institute, Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of Coimbra's University, and from University Hospital of Coimbra. Although apparently the articles address diverse themes, there are unifying aspects for the five papers of this number. On the one hand, all the articles reflect research conducted with particularly vulnerable populations of our society: the elderly, patients with lung cancer, young people hosted in foster homes, and informal caregivers of people with disabilities. On the other hand, it is noted that all these manuscripts illustrate a common concern: to study the role of some protective factors in the intra- and interpersonal functioning of individuals. Thus, in a very close perspective to positive psy...
// // // // // // // Aim. The increase in life expectancy of people with disabilities and the aging of their caregivers invite us to reflect on the present and future challenges around the provision of care. This study aims to characterize the feelings towards the future, support needs and social support networks of informal caregivers of adults with disabilities.   Participants. Forty informal caregivers, mostly parents (67.5%) of adults with cerebral palsy, intellectual disabilities and multiple disabilities. With an average age of 67.83 (SD = 11.47) years old, 72.5% with 65+, are mostly female (77.5%), married (50%), retired (65%), and the most part are single parents (40%).   Methods. We used a survey and the Personal Social Networks Analysis Tool (Guadalupe, 2009), to assess the dimensions of social personal net...
// Aims: This article aims to deepen the psychometric study of the Self-Efficacy for Meaningful Activities Scale (EAASentido) through reliability and validity analyses. The scale was developed under the theoretical constructs of self-efficacy, self-directed learning and meaning factors of older people within the context of the European project PALADIN and was intended to be a useful device for the assessment of the confidence of seniors for getting involved by themselves with meaning activities.   Method: A sample of 503 seniors and older people from the North and Centre regions of Portugal was studied with a mean age of 71.66 (ranging from 51 to 96 years old). The subjects answered to the following scales and questionnaires: Self-Efficacy for Meaningful Activities Scale, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, Positive Affect and Negative Affec...
Background: Psychopathological symptoms are very common among university students from different cultures, but the socio-demographic correlates that have been found are different depending on the studies. The correlates of such symptoms among Portuguese students have not been studied thoroughly, besides the methodological issues that arise in this type of studies, in the sense that has not been described who does the psychological evaluations.Aims:the main objective was to verify if there is a difference on psychopathological symptoms between two groups questioned by two different examiners, controlling for the potential role of social desirability, and other potential covariates. Additionally, we want to assess the level of psychopathology and its socio-demographic correlates. Methods: 185 Coimbra's university students completed the Br...
Objectives: This study aims to compare mental health literacy of adolescents and young Portuguese in what concerns depression and alcohol abuse and analyzes the pattern of responses in terms of consistency and agreement for both disorders.Method: The sample consisted of 4938 adolescents and young people, 43.0% males and 56.7% females with a mean age of 16.75 years (standard deviation = 1,62 years), who attend schools of the 3rd cycle of basic education and secondary school, belonging to the Regional Education Directorate – Center. For data collection was used QuALiSMental (MHL).Results: The results showed a modest level of MHL in most components. Although there are statistically significant differences (p < 0.05) in 88.0% of the items of MHL, suggesting different ways of looking to both mental health problems, the results show consiste...
// Introduction: The impact of the diagnosis of an oncologic disease is well-known in terms of psychological adjustment and quality of life. On the other hand it is known that depressive symptoms may also overlap the physical symptoms of cancer and cancer treatment, which may interfere in their detection and appropriate treatment approach.   Objectives: The aim of the current study was to explore the relationship between psychological adjustment to lung cancer, self-compassion, social support and emotional negative states in patients with lung cancer.   Method: Fifty-five patients diagnosed with lung cancer (38 men and 17 women) with ages ranging from 44 to 87 years old participated in the study. A set of self-report instruments was used: the Mini Mental Adjustment to Cancer Scale (MiniMac), the Self-compassion Scale (SCS; Neff, 2003)...
In the first issue of the Portuguese Journal of Behavioral and Social Research, the importance of calculating, indicating, and interpreting the effect sizes for the differences of means of two groups (d family of effect sizes) was reviewed. Effect sizes are standard metrics that allows the comparison of the results of statistical analyzes of different studies. Effect sizes also report on the impact of a factor on the variable under investigation and the association between variables. After reviewing the effect sizes for the mean differences between two groups (Espirito-Santo & Daniel, 2015) and most of the r family (Espirito-Santo & Daniel, 2017), the review of effect sizes for analysis of variance was lacking. Analysis of variance can be understood as an extension of the d family to more than two groups (ANOVA) or as an r subfamily in ...
