Polypharmacy – a frequent situation found among the elderly, related to their physiological changes and multiple morbidities – increases the risk of adverse reactions, interactions, drugs misuse and drug-related problems. Knowing that non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are widely used among the elderly, the aims of the present study were to assess the potential interactions that may occur between prescribed NSAIDs and other drugs and to create a list of recommendations for monitoring elderly patients taking NSAIDs, in order to prevent or minimize those negative outcomes. With this purpose, a retrospective study was performed at Centro de Saúde de Eiras (Coimbra, Portugal). The study involved the systematic analyses of the medication regimens of a sample of elderly patients selected from the elderly population of this primar...
Anticoagulant therapy was for a long time, limited to the use of heparins and warfarins. Recently, has been introduced in the market new alternative antithrombotic to this therapy. The availability of an oral of FXa or thrombin inhibitors has provided relevant clinical results in assays for the prophylaxis of postoperative venous thrombosis. However, these drugs do not have the polypharmacology of heparins. In this context, the investigation of small molecules that mimic the functions of the sulfated glycosaminoglycans, without the drawbacks characteristic of large chain heparins, has emerged as an area of research alternative. In this work, the major therapeutic approaches for the treatment of venous thrombosis are exposed, and is given a special focus to the study of our research group in the search for small molecules active dual an...
Marine organisms are increasingly regarded as a promising source of bioactive molecules for human pharmacotherapy, being used in conditions such as cancer, inflammation, infection and pain.Marthasterias glacialis, also known as the spiny sea-star, is an echinoderm common in the Portuguese coast, however little information is available regarding its chemical constituents. In this work, the chemistry of this organism is reviewed taking into account the latest reports on several classes of natural products, namely carotenoids, sterols, fatty acids and amino acids.
The current high overload of the National Health System results in a tendency for the decline in length of stay of individuals in hospitals and transfer of care settings, many of which was previously considered as hospital care, both for services to support the community or to the families themselves. The Primary Health Care network is the first level of contact of individuals, family and community with the National Health System. This contact allows access to essential care and solving their problems, in a specialized and personalized manner. The pharmacist's role in improving the health of patients, hospitalized or outpatient, both institutionalized or community dwelling, has been a reality over time. However, they need to take the space of excellence of the community pharmacy to demonstrate to the society and other professionals thei...
O estudo ...
Pharmacopoeias are official books that follow the scientific and technological evolution of knowledge relating to medicines, which ensures their quality update and therefore safeguarding Public Health.Nowadays, in the world, there are 49 pharmacopoeias, 46 are national, 2 are regional and 1 is international. The European Pharmacopoeia (inter-governmental), the United States Pharmacopoeia (independent of the government) and the Japanese Pharmacopoeia (governmental) are the main ones for the delineation of a global policy for quality of medicines. In Portugal, throughout times there have been official and non-official pharmacopoeias. The first official pharmacopoeia dates from 1794 and the Portuguese Pharmacopoeia 9 is currently in vigor. The Pharmacopoeial Discussion Group, the International Conference on Harmonisation and the Internatio...
Antibiotics are used in animal production, including aquaculture, to prevent and treat infectious disease. The administration of antibiotics has impact on the environment, and may lead to the emergence of antimicrobial resistance, in commensal bacteria both in human and animal gut, and in environmental bacteria, with the possible spread of resistance genes in diverse bacterial populations. The ability of horizontal transfer genes from environmental bacteria such as Aeromonas salmonicida to bacteria such as Escherichia coli has been reported. The transmission from animal to human can occur through various ways, including direct contact with animals and feces, and ingestion of food and water. The excessive and non-controlled use of antibiotics in animals has impact in public health, and transformed the antimicrobial resistance as a huge c...
