Looking at the transformations that took place in the world economy after Second World War, as a result of liberalization, deregulation and market opening process, one of the most striking features was the significant expansion of Foreign Direct Investment. So, the main purpose of this paper is to discuss the positioning of Portugal - a small open economy in the extreme west of Europe - in this context. Our analysis is based on the Investment Development Path (IDP) theory, according to which the inward and outward investment position of a country is tied with its economic development. In the present research, this hypothesis is estimated empirically for Portugal and other 25 countries in different stages of development, using fixed-effects panel data models. Generally, our results find support for IDP paradigm, although it is impossibl...
In the 1930s, the conventional neoclassical concept of economic man was subject to different kinds of criticism. One contribution that so far has not been consistently scrutinised was presented by the economic
doctrine of corporatism, which was particularly influential in Southern European countries. This paper deals with the foundations of the corporatist doctrine during the inter-war period, exploring the relevance of the concept of homo corporativus as a new approach to the study of economic behaviour and the economic
representation of human nature.
A total volume equation, ratio volume equations and a taper equation were fitted using data from trees of Eucalyptus globulus Labill. felled over much of its range in Portugal. The models for each type of equation were selected from several possible candidate functions using fit and predictive ability statistics. Data analysis showed no effect of stand density, site index and tree age on parameter values. However, climatic regions where the data came from had a significant impact on some of the parameter values of those equations. Some of them were also significantly different between data coming from stands in first rotation and from coppiced stands. The same selected functional forms for each type of equation were fitted to data inside and outside bark and for total and ratio volume equations, models for the estimation of volumes inc...
Cork growth modelling was based on two models: cork growth model for complete rings and a model for total cork thickness prediction. The cork growth model was developed using data from 189 cork samples taken at breast height. Four biological growth functions were considered using their formulation as difference equations. The evaluation of the fitting and predictive ability of the models was based on model efficiency and on several statistics computed with the press residuals, complemented with graphical analysis to assess the regression assumptions. The model selected - Lundqvist-A - can be used to predict cork thickness in complete rings at any year of the cork rotation. The model for the prediction of total cork thickness is used to predict total cork thickness from the thickness in complete rings.
We present a system of alometric biomass equations for aboveground compartments for Pinus pinea L. that allows biomass estimation with information from conventional forest inventories. We harvested 40 trees located in south of Portugal and separated and weighed all the aboveground components: needles, stem bark, branches and stem. The equations were simultaneously fitted using seemingly unrelated regression. This method allows the compatibility of the partial allometric equations with the equation for total biomass aboveground that corresponds to the sum of those 4 equations. The models were better for stem (R2adj.=0.85) and bark (R2adj.=0.83) and worst for branches (R2adj.=0.79) and needles(R2adj.=0.71). Crown biomass was always high compared with aboveground biomass, independently on stand characteristics. However it may be exacerbat...

do sistema eucaliptal.
