No entanto, a SC permanece subdiagnosticada.
Purpose: To assess the accuracy of the Plusoptix A09 noncycloplegic photorefraction for detection of refractive amblyopia risk factors (RARFs) in children and determine cutoff points. Methods: This study included 402 children observed in Pediatric Ophthalmology Clinic between June and December 2014. All children underwent initially photorefraction using Plusoptix A09 followed by cycloplegic retinoscopy (obtained during a complete ophthalmologic examination). Patients were considered to have RARFs based on American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus 2013 guidelines. Considering cycloplegic retinoscopy as the gold standard, accuracy parameters of noncycloplegic photorefraction were calculated for detection of RARFs. Results: RARFs were found in 148 (36.8%) and 151 (37.6%) cases by cycloplegic retinoscopy and photorefr...
Introduction: Adie´s pupil is a neuro-ophthalmological disorder caused by injury of postganglionic parasympathetic nerve fibers of the eye and is defined as a dilated pupil, which is unresponsive to light and moderately responsive to accommodation. Although the etiology remains unknown, there are few reports of Adie´s pupil associated with migraine. Methods: A 48-year-old woman presented with right pupil dilatation during a migraine attack. The pupillary asymetry persisted after the headache had subsided. Results: Ophthalmological examination and pilocarpine test results were consistent with Adie`s pupil. Work-up including neuroimaging showed no abnormalities. Reexamination 3 months later showed persistent unilateral mydriasis. Conclusions: The chronology of events and the exclusion of other possible etiologies favored the association...
Introduction: Cataracts are a major cause of preventable childhood blindness. Visual prognosis of these patients depends on a prompt therapeutic approach. Understanding pediatric cataracts epidemiology is of great importance for the implementation of programs of primary prevention and early diagnosis.Material and Methods: We reviewed the clinical cases of pediatric cataracts diagnosed in the last 12 years at Hospital Pedro Hispano, in Porto. Results: We identified 42 cases of pediatric cataracts with an equal gender distribution. The mean age at diagnosis was 6 years and 64.3% of patients had bilateral disease. Decreased visual acuity was the commonest presenting sign (36.8%) followed by leucocoria (26.3%). The etiology was unknown in 59.5% of cases and there was a slight predominance of nuclear type cataract (32.5%). Cataract was assoc...
Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy of selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) in eyes with open-angle glaucoma (OAG) in early and advanced stage.Material and methods: Retrospective review of patients treated with SLT in our hospital with a follow-up time of 6 months. SLT was performed in eyes with primary or pseudoexfoliation OAG. Indications for the procedure were insufficient intraocular pressure (IOP) control or poor compliance to medical treatment. IOP records were obtained preoperatively, 2 weeks, 2 and 6 months after laser treatment. There were considered as success criteria in early glaucoma group a reduction of IOP<21 mmHg and> 20% of the initial IOP, and for advanced glaucoma group a reduction of IOP<18 mmHg and> 20% from baseline. Results: Forty-four eyes from 34 patients were included in the study. In early glaucoma stage group,...
Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of the internal limiting membrane (ILM) inverted flap technique (IFT) in large macular hole (MH) surgery. Material and Methods: Retrospective analysis of eyes of patients with large MHs who underwent vitrectomy with ILM IFT between January 2013 and December 2014, with a minimum follow-up of 6 months. Myopic macular holes were excluded. We evaluated best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), hole closure documented by OCT and complications. We compared preoperative and postoperative values. The Wilcoxon test was used for comparing BCVA (p <0.05). Results: 17 eyes of 17 patients with a mean age of 63.24 years were studied. 76.5% of eyes had primary MHs, 11,8% post-vitrectomy and 11,8% post-traumatic. Mean minimum MH diameter was 578,5 ± 147μm and the mean MH duration was 35,9 months. According to...
Introduction: The combined hamartoma of the retina and retinal pigment epithelium (CHR-RPE) is a rare congenital malformation consisting of a mixture of glial tissue, retinal vessels, retina and RPE with varying degrees of disorder at the level of the vitreoretinal interface. It usually occurs isolated, although some cases may have systemic involvement, particularly neurofibromatosis type 1 and 2; Methods: Clinical case report; Results: A 7 years-old-boy was referenced to our department due to divergent strabismus and vision loss in right eye (OD). Visual acuity was 1/10 in OD and 10/10 in left eye (OS) and did not improve with correction. The study of ocular alignment revealed an exotropia in OD. Ophthalmoscopy of OD revealed a slightly elevated gray lesion, with marked vascular tortuosity, almost completely covered by fibroglial tiss...
Purpose: To evaluate the visual function and determine the factors associated with the development of refractive errors in school-aged children born prematurely.Material and methods: One hundred and seventeen children with gestational age less than 37 weeks that were born between 1 January 2006 and 31 December 2007 were included. For statistical purpose, participants were divided into groups according to gestational age and birth weight (BW). All made a complete ophthalmic examination and measurement of optical components. Results: There was no statistically significant increase of refractive errors in children born more prematurely (p>0.05), although the value of the spherical equivalent was greater for children with BW <1500g (p=0.042). It was observed a higher number of cases of strabismus in children with BW <2000 g (p=0.03...
