The term neurosis has a long tradition in psychiatric nosology. It was first introduced by Cullen referring to diseases of the nervous system in which there were no obvious physical lesion. It evolved to a wide use with the assumption of an aetiological meaning in the psychodynamic literature. Partially as a result, it has been removed as an organizing principle in psychiatric classifications subsisting, however, in the heading of one group of disorders of ICD-10.
Nevertheless, in the clinical context, the terms “neuroticism” and “neurotic” are often used as an informal diagnostic for a relatively large group of patients described as presenting both depressive and anxiety symptoms of fluctuating, chronic pattern and frequently associated with underlying maladaptive personality traits.
Most interestingly, a sparking debate subsists am...

Modern web and mobile-based applications exchange information with each other and with other services, through specific APIs that extend the applications multipart functionality and enable interoperable information exchange. Currently these mechanisms are implemented through the usage of RESTful APIs and data interchange is performed using the JSON format over the HTTP or HTTPS protocol. Most of the times, due to specific security requirements, the SSL/TLS protocol is used to create a secure authenticated channel between the two- communicating service end-points, where all the content is encrypted. This is an important security feature if the sender and the receptor are the only communicating parties, however this may not be the case. In this paper, a granular mechanism for selectively offering confidentiality and integrity to JSON mes...
Familial Hypercholesterolaemia (FH) is a genetic disorder leading to an increase in levels of total and low density lipoprotein cholesterol promoting atherosclerosis (ATH) and premature cardiovascular disease (CVD). Inflammation has been considered to be involved in the pathogenesis of CVD, namely the activity of pro-inflammatory cytokines and acute phase proteins. Genetic and oxidative stress markers may contribute to ATH and CVD outcome.
We intended to investigate the role of genetic, inflammatory and oxidative biomarkers in the clinical outcome of FH patients and study its putative correlation with CVD. We selected 41 FH patients with CVD, 91 without CVD and 49 healthy individuals. All individuals were characterized through the determination of the lipid profile (high density lipoprotein, LDL and total cholesterol (TC), triglycer...
Several studies demonstrated that sdLDL are an emerging cardiovascular (CV) risk factor. The objective of this study was sdLDL measurement in patients with genetic diagnosis of Familial Hypercholesterolaemia (FH) and clinical diagnosis of Familial Combined Hyperlipidaemia (FCHL) to establish a relation between sdLDL, CV risk and the efficacy of therapeutics.
Lipid profile was determined using a polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis system that separates the particles in serum that contain cholesterol. The lipidogram obtained classifies the patients as being profile A (low CV risk) or B (high CV risk) depending on the sdLDL concentration.
The lipid profile was obtained from 43 FH adults and 46 FCHL adults, index and relatives. FH and FCHL patients without medication and with high sdLDL (>6mg/dl) have significant higher levels of total ...
This paper presents a programable perturbation and observation control implementation for a wind generation system and its power electronic converter. The objective of the method in this particular application is to adjust the power delivered to charge a battery to its maximum and allowable value, function of the real values of several parameters and their continuous variation, the most important the wind velocity and the turbine efficiency. Also, to improve the power throughput and to use the turbine and generator marginal zones of operation, an unusual power converter is used, allowing a wide range for the input voltage values. The implemented control is continuously measuring the actual power and looks for a new and powerful operation point. © 2014 IEEE.
