Introduction: Disciplinary actions may have a significant impact in medical doctors’ and patients’ lives. The objective of this study was the assessment of the disciplinary actions in Obstetrics and Gynecology that occurred in the north of Portugal in years 2008 to 2012.Material and Methods: Retrospective descriptive study based on the anonymized data contained in the annual activity reports of Conselho Disciplinar da Seção Regional Norte da Ordem dos Médicos from 2008 to 2012. We calculated the proportion of disciplinary actions in Obstetrics and Gynaecology over the total number of registered specialists in that speciality. We also analysed the type of complainers, accused, institutions, complaints and decisions. For statistical inference proportions with 95% confidence intervals were estimated. Results: From years 2008 to 2012, we re...
Simple rhonchopathy (SR) a!fects 25% of the adult population, wild mild to moderate snoring can a!fect up to 30% of the adult women and 50% of the adult men.Somnoplasty or radiofrequency of the palate (RFP) is a rela-tively recent procedure used in the treatment of SR and mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) with a predominant obstruction at the level of the palate. The authors present a review of the patients who underwent somnoplasty at Pedro Hispano Hospital from 2002 to 2006, evaluating the efftcacy of this technique in rhonchopathy control. The results of PRF are presented according to the subjective improvement evaluated with Visual Analogue Scale for snoring, snoring intensity evaluated with the department protocol and the need for another surgical procedure. They are compared to the available literature and th...
We report a case of a 26 year-old man with diplopia, proptosis and a mass in superior eyelide of the left eye, slow-growth, with 2 months duration. He had a history of facial trauma 5 months ago. The CT and MRI showed a frontal sinus mucocele. The patient was treated with antibiotic and had been subjected to functional endoscopic surgery with marsupialization of the frontal mucocele.
Peripheral facial paralysis can result from various causes, being idiopathic in 75% of cases and secondary in 25%1. Occurs not only in adults but also in children, 2 to 4 times less frequently. Facial schwannoma is an example of a neoplastic cause, accounting for about 5% of all diagnosis. Clinical, imagiologic and pathological data are necessary for diagnosis, due to lack of specific symptoms. The treatment of the peripheral facial paralysis is still controversial and depends on the underlying cause. The authors present the case of a 3 years olds boy, referred to ENT consultation for congenital peripheral facial palsy, with progressive worsening. The diagnostic procedures carried out revealed a lesion suggestive of facial nerve tumor (schwannoma). The authors review this clinical entity, including main diagnostic tests and therapeutic...
The authors present a clinical case of congenital hearing loss due to cochlear aplasia diagnosed at 58 years old, as a imagiological finding during the study of a chronic otitis media. Cochlear aplasia is a rare congenital malformation that represents only 3% of cochlear malformations. It is characterized by the complete absence of the cochlea, with the presence of remnants of the vestibule and semicircular canals. It is to emphasize the importance of attentive taking of medical history, suspicion and investigation of the cause of deafness, even when this can be explained by another recognized condition.
We report a case of a giant frontoethmoidal osteoma with orbital extension in a 55-year-old man who was referred to us by his general practitioner because of a long time facial deformity. A review of the literature is also presented.
Vascular leiomyoma is a benign smooth muscle tumor. lt is common in the uterus, alimentary tract, skin and subcutaneous tissue, but uncommon in the head and neck area. We report a case that involved the nasal cavity, an extremely rare location. Treatment options and a review of the literature are discussed.
Idiopathic Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss {ISSHL}, or Sudden Deafness, is a clinical entity in which the physiopathology, prognosis and optimal treatment are still under debate. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBO) provides a better coclear oxygenation and might have a positive effect in these patients' hearing recovery. The authors describe a retrospective analysis of our institution's results treating ISSHL with HBO.Globally, HBO granted a good result (final hearing loss 20 dB) to 31.1% of the patients. As a part of primary treatment, HBO had good result for 47.6% of the patients, with a 59.0% average recovery of the initial hearing loss. As a "salvage" treatment, it had good result for 25.5% of the patients, with a 38.5% average recovery of the hearing loss.Although the unpredictable outcome of the disease and the existence of non-con...
Introduction: The etiopathogenic mechanism of Idiopathic Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss (ISSHL) remain unclear. Vascular event or viral infection theories had been suggested. In any case, HBO provides a better cochlear oxygenation and cellular viability after acute lesion.Material and methods: The authors present a retrospective study of the patients with ISSHL who started HBO in Pedro Hispano Hospital (2006-2011). The protocol included 20 sessions with 100% oxygen in hyperbaric chamber at 2,5 atm and for 90 minutes. For analysis we used software SPSS 17.0, with a 0,05 level of significance. We reviewed 347 cases. Results: The average time from complaints until the beginning of HBO was 15,8 days. After failure with corticotherapy and the introduction with HBO we had a hearing recovery of 20 dB, using SRT (Speech Reception Threshold),...
Middle ear cholesteatoma is a rare disease entity in children. It is an important and rare disease that may have serious consequences. Objectives: Evaluate the results of the ORL Service of Pedro Hispano Hospital (PHH) and analyze the variables associated with the recurrence rate and audiometric results of patients who undergone tympanomastoidectomy for cholesteatoma.Material and Methods: Retrospective review of children under the age of 18 years who had cholesteatoma surgery between 1 January 2001 and 31 December 2011 in PHH.Results: Review of 28 children (30 ears) who had cholesteatoma surgery. 76,7% male, 23,3% female, mean age 10,7 years. Otorrhea and hearing loss are the most common clinical symptoms observed in 76,6% and 40% of children. 56,7% of cholesteatomas were classified as S3, S4 and S5 extension during surgery with ossicul...
