Sudden deafness is a relatively common otologic emergency; it may be associated to a vertiginous syndrome. lt is mostly idiopathic. However, in some cases it's possible to identify the etiology. When a central neurological cause is responsible for this symptom, often coexist other deficits, but sometimes, these can pass unidentified. We present the case of a 31 year old woman that went to our hospital because she had a sudden onset of vertigo with vomits during an air flight. Some hours after she noted the sudden appearance of hearing loss and tinnitus on the right ear. The otoneurologic examination showed right cophosis and nystagmus. The MRI showed an infarction of the postero-inferior cerebellar artery territory (PICA).Later, angiography revealed right vertebral artery dissection. She was submitted to conservative treatment with part...
Papillomas are the most common benign tumours of larynx. Children and adults can be both affected. The infection by human papillomavirus virus is responsible for the development of laryngeal recurrent papillomatosis. The treatment consists of surgical removal of the lesions, although the recurrence rate is high. Some cases of malignant transformation of papilomas are described. In the present article we present a retrospective analysis of a period of 16 years, relative to the occurrence of laryngeal papillomatosis in an oncologic ENT department. The incidence of this pathology comparatively to the cases of larynx carcinomas appeared in the same period of time is also approached. The coexistence/evolution of the forms of adult laryngeal papillomatosis to squamous cell carcinoma was investigated. Although this department isn't specificall...
Mucocele is a benign lesion with slow growth containing mucoid material. It is frequently found in the frontal and ethmoid sinuses. Clinical manifestations may range from asymptomatic to frontal cephalea, facial edema or asymmetry and ophthalmologic alterations as proptosis and reduced visual acuity. It is rarely bilateral. The authors present a case report of a 72 year old woman with a bilateral fronto-ethmoidal mucocele. A brief review of the literature is also included.
Mucoceles are mucous-filled cystic lesions of the paranasal sinuses that can result in bone erosion with extracranial, intracranial or orbital extension. They are denominated mucopyocele if there is infection of the mucous filling. The surgical approach when they are localized in the frontal sinus is a challenge for the ENT surgeon; some authors prefer exclusively endoscopic techniques that go from marsupialization to Draf III procedures, while others advocate combined osteoplastic approaches. We report a case of 74 year-old man who presented at our hospital center (CHAA) outpatient clinic with right frontal tumefaction with 10 month evolution and slow growing. After imagiological study, it was established the diagnosis of a giant frontal mucocele. The patient was submitted to endoscopic sinus surgery, through a Draf type III frontal s...
Osteitis is a group of disease that provoke alterations of bone metabolism and growth. Paget's disease, Osteopetrosis, Osteogenesis lmperlecta, Otosclerosis, Fibrous Dysplasia are otodystrophies that are clinically, radiologically and pathalogically distinct. The characteristics of the different otodystrophies are reviewed and the data of a patient presented with the suggestion that the reoder determines the diagnosis.
