Hematol Oncol. 2002 Jun;20(2):87-93. Cd8(+)/V beta 5.1(+) large granular lymphocyte leukemia associated with autoimmune cytopenias, rheumatoid arthritis and vascular mammary skin lesions: successful response to 2-deoxycoformycin. Granjo E, Lima M, Correia T, Lisboa C, Magalhães C, Cunha N, Teixeira MA, Queirós ML, Candeias J, Matutes E. Department of Clinical Haematology, Hospital Geral de São João, Porto, Portugal. npp46740@mail.telepac.pt Abstract We report a case of CD8(+)/V beta 5.1(+) T-cell large granular lymphocyte leukemia (T-LGL leukemia) presenting with mild lymphocytosis, severe autoimmune neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, polyarthritis and recurrent infections with a chronic disease course. Immunophenotyping showed an expansion of CD3(+)/TCR alpha beta(+)/CD8(+bright)/CD11c(+)/CD57(-)/CD56(-) large granular lymphocy...
The identification of species is fundamental to taxonomy. In microbiology, information about each microorganism (e.g., morphological and molecular descriptions, physiological and biochemical properties, ecological roles, and societal risks or benefits) is the key element in this process. Identifications can been a long process with frequent revisions of the taxonomic schemes. These changes make identifications even more complicated for the non-specialised researchers as each taxonomic group has specialised literature, terminology and characters. Analysis of microbial cells for their identification using Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionisation – Time Of Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) is a modern approach for these studies. MALDI-TOF MS has contributed to increasing scientific knowledge about the microorganisms and...
BACKGROUND: Recently, a high prevalence of G2P[4] rotavirus (RV) infection was reported from Brazil, and linked with the universal RV vaccination programme that used the G1P[8] live oral RV vaccine. OBJECTIVE: To determine the genotypes of RV co-circulating in a non-vaccinated population, in northern Portugal in the winter season of 2007. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective multicenter study of the genotypes circulating in the northwest region of Portugal during January to March 2007. Children with acute gastroenteritis, who attended the Pediatric Emergency Services of five Hospitals, were included in the study. The parents of the children completed a clinical and epidemiological data questionnaire and stool samples were collected. Stool samples positive in a RV enzyme immunoassay (EIA) were genotyped by reverse transcriptase-polymerase cha...
Primary hyperparathyroidism is a rare occurrence in pregnancy with significant risks to the mother and the foetus, witch is related to the level of serum calcium. A 41-year-old women, gravida 2, para 1, presented at 22 weeks gestation with nausea, vomiting and mild cognitive dysfunction associated with hypercalcemic crisis. The hypercalcemia was observed to be related to parathyroid hyperplasia that was surgically removed. Complete resolution of her symptomatology and hypercalcemia occurred postoperatively. The pregnancy was complicated with transient hypertension. A small for gestational age healthy male infant was delivered at term with no neonatal complications related with this pathology.

For the past decades fibre reinforced plastics are increasing their importance as one of the most interesting group of material because of their low weight, high strength and stiffness. Good hole drilling processes are essential. To obtain good quality holes it is important to identify the type of material, ply stacking sequence and fibre orientation. In this paper drilling of quasi-isotropic hybrid carbon+glass/epoxy plates is studied. Two commercial and an alternative step drill are compared in terms of thrust force, surface roughness and delamination. Results suggest that the proposed step drill can be a good option for laminate drilling.
