China’s transformation into a dynamic market economy and its integration into global economic system have been dramatic in the last quarter of the 20th century. In the transformation and rise of China, the policy towards innovation played an increasing role. The paper investigates in detail China's innovation policy in seven categories: reform in the governance model, transformation of the public S&T institutions, finance of innovation, business innovation support structure, human resource policy and legislative actions, and policy towards private ownership and foreign investment. The analysis frames the complicated innovation system such as the Chinese and reveals that several dimensions of the Chinese innovation policy that were designed and implemented very recently are still immature and incoherent. In 1985 China began its reform on the Science & Technology (S&T) sector which was inherited from a planned economy. The reform over the past 20 years is deemed to be a decisive factor in China’s science and technology progress. The paper first argues that two fundamental tasks of China’s S&T sector reform are to enhance scientific productivity and strengthen the industry-academic relationships. Subsequently, the reform policies are outlined within three categories: 1) reforming the funding system, 2) improving R&D management 3) strengthening industry-academic relationships. The evolution of S&T institutes such as the Chinese Academy of Science is examined to provide micro-level evidence of policy impacts. The scientific output of China’s S&T sector did achieve the remarkable improvement in the reform period, but we also observe the rap...

Anesthesiologists face stressful working conditions that can culminate in burnout syndrome. Despite various studies and protective measures which have attempted to prevent this situation, burnout continues to be a problem within the profession, impacting negatively on physicians' lives and their performance. In this review article mechanisms and consequences of burnout are described in addition to individual strategies for stress management and burnout reduction with potential impact on health care quality and wellbeing in anesthesiologists. Organizational strategies appear to have an important role in burnout reduction but need to be used in conjunction with individual programs. The latter are essential to both reducing stress and burnout in anesthesiologists and improving happiness and wellbeing. New measures of emotion regulation st...
