All anamnesis evaluation was normal. She has been medicated immediately with steroids, antiretrovirals and hyperbaric oxygen and a laboratorial and imagiological investigation began. Results: Partial recovery was noticed after 10 hyperbaric therapeutic sessions. Objective: To determine the prevalence of hearing loss in Navy personnel that was reveled between June of 2005 and June of 2006 at the Navy Disability Evaluation Council, categorizing these cases in accordance with: the causes of hearing loss, the year of enlistment in the Navy, the presence on expeditions in the Portuguese African war, the rate, the category, the rank and the degree of disability due to the hearing loss. Methods: A retrospective observational study was performed. Data was collected from the records of the Navy Disability Eval- uation Council and from the records of Otolaryngology consul- tation carried out at the Portuguese Navy Hospital. Results: Hearing loss prevalence is 24%, this sample is com- posed mostly of individuals with noise induced hearing loss, enlisted in the Navy between 1965 and 1970, who were present i...
A laryngocele is an abnormal dilatation of the laryngeal saccule which communicates with the laryngeal lumen. It may be congenital or acquired; the acquired type has a multifactorial ethiopathogenesis and may be related to the increase in the intralaryngeal pressure. Typically it is found in caucasian male individuals and in their fifth or sixth decades of life; it is more frequently unilateral and combined or mixed type. Usually it develops slowly; however it may present as acute airway obstruction requiring urgent intubation or tracheotomy, as in the case of infection with the formation of a laryngopyocele. We report a case of a 71-year-old female patient, who sells flowers in a street, admitted in the Hospital de São José- Urgency Room with a history of odynophagia and dysphonia for one month and a half and that after being medicate...

Objectives: Identify factors that might influence post-operative results in stapes surgery, as the computed tomography (CT) images.Patients and Methods: Retrospective study of 42 patients. Statistical analysis with the T Student and the Pearson Correlation studies. Results: The medium air-bone gap (GAO) pre and post-operative was 42 dB and 13 dB respectively. From the 11 CT evaluated, 4 had active focus and 5 had inactive focus. In 1 CT, the image was considered normal. In 7 ears, the focus was type 1. There was no statistical significance between hearing results and the presence of Carhart notch and the pre-operative GAO (p>O.O5). Although there was some positive correlation between the focus activity showed by CT and the hearing results, this was not statistically significant. Conclusion: CT scan can be helpful in treatment decisions i...
Introduction: Diving has become increasingly popular with time, with an increase of associated pathologies. This issue is especially important in deep diving, where there is less experience and absence of published data. The lack of information is even more concerning when dealing with professional military divers, who are at increased risk, given their higher exposure to diving and the specific nature of activities performed.Material and Methods: We aimed to characterize the nasal airflow of military divers participating in an international diving exercise occurred in Portugal between September and October 2010, and performing daily deep dives. Results: We studied 35 divers, submitted to a daily maximal inspiratory nasal flux measurement (nasal peak flow) and to a nasal congestion evaluation questionnaire, before and after each dive.Co...
